Hybrids

The word 'Hybrid', when referring to genetics means, the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock, especially the offspring produced by breeding plants or animals of different varieties, species, or races. In general the word means, 'something of mixed origin or composition.' Hybrid dogs, or designer dogs as some call them, are becoming quite popular.

By crossing two dogs with different breeds, the resulting hybrid dogs are healthier, with less genetic problems than both their pure bred parents, stronger, more vigorous and even live longer. The hybrid can have any combination of the parent's character, the good and the bad, so make sure you are familiar and okay with both parent's character before you purchase a hybrid dog.

Hybrid Dogs are often referred to as designer dogs when they are selectively and carefully bred, with a known pedigree of pure bred. These elite "designer dogs" are often bred to produce healthy, strong, reliable dogs for a specific purpose. For example, some dogs are bred as guide dogs for the blind but hypoallergenic, or an athletic dog but smaller size, or a loyal dog that does not shed.

Here are some very popular hybrid dogs.

Chorkie (Chihuahua/Yorkshire Terrier Mix)

The Chorkie is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Chihuahua and the Yorkshire Terrier. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Yorkiepoo (Yorkshire Terrier/Poodle mix)

The Yorkiepoo, also called a Yorkiedoodle or a Yo-Yopoo, is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Poodle.

Puggle (Pug/Beagle mix)

A new highly popular cross-breed dog created by combining a Pug with a Beagle. The Puggle is often linked with starting the "Designer Dog" era. In 2005 the Puggle was a guest on the Today's Show. Since then their popularity has skyrocketed.

Cava Tzu ( Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Shih Tzu mix)

This is a planned breeding between a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and a Shih-tzu. Their lively spirit makes them great pets and companions. They enjoy the careful playfulness of children, and a warm lap to cuddle on. Under their beautiful straight coat of many colors is a sturdy little body. They are minimal to non shedding, and they need moderate exercise.
